FESTIVAL OF LIVING: LIFT-OFF '96 ..OF, BY, FOR THE PEOPLE
By Jo Heiliger
Hard lessons were given on April 19, 1995 at 9:02 A.M. in
Oklahoma City. DEVASTATION, CHAOS, PAIN, DEATH. Followed by
HELPING HANDS, LOVE-LOFTED RESOURCES, HEALING, RENEWALIs one hard
lesson that we need to learn: "To develop a world which spawns
and encourages strong families, creating a caring community for
each family member within their community? When Families
Understand Nurturing of their children, the comunity is
strengthened and families and communities can have FUN and
celebrate LIFE.While the April 19, 1995 bombing of the Alfred P.
Murrah Federal building in Oklahoma City is unfortunately not the
only tragedy perpetrated by violent action, it has seized
national attention due to its location and magnitude. As many
have noted, this seems to be serving as a "wake-up call" for
action to stem the tide of violence and bring civility to our
society. The explosion was not only felt by persons in the
surrounding area that morning, but continues to impact our nation
in a rippling effect. The theme: HONORING THOSE WHO DIED BY
HELPING THOSE WHO LIVE will be supported by efforts through two
different focuses. One focus is primarily involving those who
were directly affected by the bombing incident. Local people are
being invited to join in a group effort in expressing their
feelings through song which may become distributed through groups
organized to support themselves as survivors and victims of this
event. The Festival will create and stimulate efforts which
buttress: FAMILIES, FRIENDSHIP, and FAITH with a focus on the
positives of *people caring and sharing* through the "Golden
Rule" which is present in all faiths of the world. Stated a
little differently it carries the meaning "Do things to benefit
yourself and others".When we recongize the little known (1)
heroes as helping hands, (2) places and (3) events which
contribute to the development of families and communities across
the United States, it strengthens our ties as Americans to the
heritage of our nation. It demonstrates what individuals,
families, and communitites contribute to a nation *of, by and for
the people.* Least we forget the very essence of the strengths of
the founders and preservers of our freedoms.National Community
Education Association and the Oklahoma Center for Community
Education offer you the opportunity to tell your story as you
discover the "Hidden Treasure" of the strengths of individuals
who are part of your heritage.May festivals with the maypole
dance interweave the colorful ribbons illustrating the
multifaceted population as our community! It's a day to
BE-A-FRIEND, sharing the May basket of flowers - doing something
which is anonymous with no thought of return! Perhaps it's the
time to find out how grandparents were part of making their
community a better place to live. Or, some may need to share a
story which "teaches" someone from the younger generation - by
sharing a saved treasure from the past and how it represents a
"value" that is important to the owner. That value may be simply
told - how working together has brought people from all over the
world to be a part of an exciting adventure - the future of our
country. Contact: Oklahoma Center for Community Education,
Community Partnership Development Foundation, P.O.Box 1951,
Stillwater, OK 74076, Tele.: (405) 744-9899 or (405) 372-2698, or
e-mail joh@osuunx.ucc.okstate.edu for more information.Are we
planning the FAMILY REUNION OF THE FUTURE? Isn't that when we
share our dreams, hopes, and stories with the family members? The
family grows stronger as individuals recognize their heritage and
have connection with a caring community. YOU can make this Your
Opportunity Unlimited and broaden the horizons of those around
you - It WILL make a difference.
